I Am Familiar With American History - 1475 Words

Since my earlier years, I have always had a picture in my mind of the Native Americans sitting at the table and feasting with the Euro-American colonists. It would seem that the two relatively different nations were cordial and warm. Being that I am familiar with American History, names such as Squanto, Hobbamock or Massasoit are rather familiar. Sometime between 1620, when the Plymouth Colony came to be and the outbreak of the first wars with the Native American inhabitants, is frequently understood as a period of reciprocated understanding and peace on the human and individual level. Although not covered in our readings, there are such names as Uncas or Phillip that are usually associated with devastation and war, rather than alliance and harmony. It is apparent that the associations between the Native Americans and Euro-American colonists were far more multifaceted and vibrant than it appeared from the attractive oversimplification of some periodicals and cinemas. When the first colonist came to the shores of the New Land, they did not enter a vacant virgin land. The land had been the home to many Native Americans with their own flourishing civilizations and antiquity. For thousands and thousands of years, the Natives had managed to keep up their distinctive way of life and philosophy and to earn their keep without the benefits of European advances.
